Organic lawn maintenance is a simple process that any Vancouver homeowner can perform in their yard. At Vandenberg’s Landscape Design, we understand how important a healthy, green lawn is to you. That is why we offer a wide range of landscaping services, including yard and lawn maintenance. If you are thinking about taking about organic lawn maintenance in Vancouver, here are some of the things you should consider.

Soil Testing

The first step in switching to organic lawn maintenance is performing a soil test to determine which nutrients are lacking and which organic amendments should be incorporated. To perform a soil test, you will need to dig up samples from several different areas of the lawn, about 2 cups total, and mail them off to a local nursery or university that performs soil testing. Once you know which amendments are required, prepare the lawn by mowing it down to about 2 inches, pull out weeds and thatch, and aerate before adding the amendments.

Spreading a half-inch of compost on the lawn is a great way to add essential organic matter to the soil. Doing so will help improve the soil structure, especially in clay or sand-heavy soil, as well as provide beneficial organisms (bacteria, algae, fungi, and nematodes) that will keep the soil healthy. If you are thinking about composting your lawn, try to use compost that is made up of decomposed organic plant material. This type of compost can easily be purchased from a local nursery or you can make your own compost by collecting yard waste in a backyard bin.

Organic Fertilizers

Unlike traditional fertilizers, organic fertilizers work to provide an easy to handle diet of nutrients that are slowly released into the soil, providing an extra boost during the growing season. Organic fertilizers contain a wide range of natural ingredients such as seaweed for potassium, feather meal for nitrogen, and bone meal for phosphorous.

Consider overseeding the lawn once a year to help build a denser turf that will crowd out weeds. When overseeding, choose a hardy, pest-resistant grass species and plant it early to give it enough time to germinate before the summer months. Once the seeds have been sown, make sure to keep the seeded areas moist until the new grass is well-established.
