Surrey Landscape Design Trends for 2018

Categories: Landscape Design | January 25, 2018

At Vandenberg’s Landscape Design, we understand how harnessing the beauty of nature combined with simple landscape design techniques can create a big impact on the overall aesthetics of a home. That is why we offer a wide range of landscape design services (yard and lawn maintenance, irrigation, synthetic turf installation, etc.) that are designed to help homeowners keep up with the latest landscape design trends. Some of the Surrey landscape design trends for 2018 include:

1. Japanese Gardens

Japanese gardens avoid using artificial-looking designs by instead focusing on nature and natural scenes. This type of garden is specifically designed to imitate nature, as plants and flowers are arranged carefully amongst waterfalls, bridges, and streams. Some of the most common types of plants used in this design trend are pine trees, plum trees, mosses, and bamboos.

2. Small Gardens

With the use of the right landscape design, almost any small place can be turned into an incredible landscape. In order to properly use the available space and avoid overcrowding, consider creating built-in seats and choosing monochromatic or cool colours (silvery greens, violets, blues, and yellows). Making good use of a lighting system can also help add a sense of space and dimension to your small garden.

3. Focusing on Craftsmanship

This design trend works to pull away from mass-produced products in favour of handcrafted pieces. Instead of shopping for pieces for your garden space at a local store, try hiring an artisan to help add a structure or other important elements to your property. Some of the architectural pieces that would look great in any garden include arches, arbours, playhouses/sheds, and pergolas.

4. Creating Natural Habitats

Many gardeners these days are adjusting their plant sections and even redesigning their gardens to better support local wildlife. Some of the ways in which you can alter your backyard landscaping to better support wildlife include:

  • Growing both seed-producing and berry-bearing plants
  • Restricting or stopping the use of insecticides
  • Replacing some or all of the lawn with plants and trees

5. Pushing the Seasonal Boundaries

Another landscape design trend for 2018 will be putting more thought into winter landscapes. Since empty landscapes often appear dreary, you can consider livening up the garden during the dormant season with dazzling colours and sophisticated textures can help enliven the garden. When considering plants for winter interest, consider the following:

  • Deciduous shrubs or trees with colourful or peeling park
  • Evergreens that change colour in the winter
  • Early bloomers that bring late winter flowers
