Landscaping Tips for Beginners

Categories: Landscaping Tips | August 9, 2018

These landscaping tips for beginners are designed to help new homeowners tackle their first landscaping projects in a relaxing and successful way. At Vandenberg’s Landscape Design, we want to help you create the perfect outdoor space for your home. That is why we offer a selection of different landscaping services, including landscape design and landscape maintenance.

1. Start with a Plan

Before jumping into your first big landscaping project, consider taking the time to create a plan by mapping out the space and how you want it to look in the end. Start by drawing a bird’s-eye view of the space, noting the placement of existing hardscapes, such as buildings, fences, driveways, etc. This will help you visualize how much space you have to work with and where new elements should be added.

2. Make a Wish List

Once you have a plan in place, you can start making a wish list of items and plants you would like to include in your landscape design. If you already have flowerbeds, take note of the plants that are growing successful and fill in any blank spots with different colours, heights, foliage, and bloom time to create the best visual appeal.

3. Choose a Garden Style

When planting your garden, make sure to consider what plants will best complement your home’s architectural style. Some of the different garden styles you can choose from include:

Formal Gardens

Formal gardens incorporate straight lines, symmetry, and elegant focal points, such as statues and fountains. In this style of garden, colour is second to structure and the mood should be refined and serene.

Informal Gardens

A balance between formal and natural style gardens, informal gardens tend to involve a lot of curves, colours, lush growth, asymmetry, and natural-shaped trees and shrubs. The mood of this type of garden tends to be more comfortable and relaxing.

Natural Gardens

This type of garden is designed to imitate nature, making it an extremely low maintenance choice that blends into its surroundings. Natural gardens can incorporate anything from a wildflower meadow to a bog. With its natural abundance, this style of garden offers a more untamed and energetic mood.

4. Hardscape Before Planting

While it may be tempting to start your landscape design by planting flowers, it is always best to start with your hardscapes first. This way you will be able to build up your garden around features, such as fountains, ponds, and waterfalls. When it comes time to start planting, begin by planting trees and shrubs first, working your way down to planting flowers.
