Landscape Design Tips: Choosing the Right Water Feature

Categories: Landscape Design, Landscaping Tips, Water Features | September 20, 2018

Choosing the right water feature for your particular landscaping needs can make a huge impact on the overall aesthetics of a backyard. At Vandenberg’s Landscape Design, we know how challenging it can be to determine which water feature will fit best into a backyard landscape design. That is why we offer a wide range of backyard landscaping services, including landscape design and water feature installation.

How to Choose the Right Water Feature for Your Landscape

Some considerations you should keep in mind when trying to choose the right water feature for your landscape include:

1. Determine the Amount of Space Available

Before purchasing a water feature for your backyard landscaping, it is important to determine how much space there is available. Doing so will not only help you determine which type of water feature will work best in your space but also what size of water feature you should purchase. When measuring out the space you want to use, make sure that you are leaving enough space to easily move around the garden.

2. Consider Water Movement

While there is a wide variety of different types of water features to choose from, one of the most important decisions you will have to make is determining if the water feature should have still or moving water. In most cases, water features that only have still water are easier to install and maintain; however, water features with moving water can add a sense of relaxation and tranquility to any space.

3. Think About Incorporating Plants or Fish

If you are looking to incorporate a more elaborate water feature into your backyard landscaping, you will need to consider whether or not to include plants or fish in the overall design. Still water features tend to be the best option for plants, as long as the water is in a location that receives enough sunlight, while moving water is ideal for incorporating fish because the flowing water is more oxygenated. Before incorporating either plants or fish into your water feature, it is always a good idea to ask a landscape designer what will need to be done to turn your water feature into a habitable environment.
